Sometimes we get the chance to be fully involved in a special build for a customer (or in fact one of us). This bike although seems to be fairly straight forward, it took a lot of digesting and contemplating over. The owner of this bike has come from an already high specification bike, so the idea was to take this build to the next level.
We were supplied with the superbly engineered Specialized S-Works Venge frameset, this frameset was one of a number of others that were considered.
Next was the groupset, after falling in love with the electronic Shimano Di2 groups in Ultegra ‘guise there was only one way this could go upwards and that is with the top of the range Dura-Ace Di2. Next was the wheels and stem/bars – it became apparent that the ‘inner tart’ took over and they simply had to match, there would be no mis-matched components on this build, Zipp 303, 404 wheels were an early running favourite, however assessing the cost and benefits against the Shimano C50’s – the C50’s won that battle, which naturally led to Shimano/PRO for the stem and bars.
To compliment the Shimano/PRO theme even the bar tape that was selected was from the same manufacturer, a very clean looking carbon style tape, that wrapped the carbon bars easily and have finished off the look nicely.
The only non-Shimano/PRO/Specialized part to grace the bike is the saddle, a Prologo CPC Scratch 2 Tirox Saddle – somethings you just can’t change, and the saddle is probably the main, once you find the comfortable one, then most will inevitably stick with it.
